Indian-American Man Arrested for Killing Mother and Brother in U.S.

A tragic double murder has occurred in Acton, Massachusetts, where police arrested a 17-year-old boy accused of killing his own mother and younger brother. The most shocking aspect of the case is that investigators say the teenager allegedly used the artificial intelligence tool ChatGPT to seek information before carrying out the killings. Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan told CBS Boston that the teenager has been identified as Arjun Aravind. He has been charged with two counts of murder in connection with the deaths of his 45-year-old mother, Sudha Venkatesan, and his 14-year-old younger brother, Siddharth Aravind. Police arrested him in the Wayland area early Wednesday morning.

According to District Attorney Ryan, Arjun’s father called police around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday after going to the family’s home on Martha Lane to check on them. He had been unable to reach anyone despite repeated attempts. Earlier that morning, a private tutor had also arrived at the house for a lesson and received no response after knocking. Police said Arjun’s father last saw his wife at around 7 a.m. Tuesday when he left for work. His younger brother, Siddharth, was seen at a recreation center that morning and returned home around noon. Investigators believe the killings occurred sometime between the morning and early afternoon.

Police entered the home Tuesday evening and found Siddharth’s body on the first floor and Sudha’s body in the basement. Ryan said both victims had suffered severe injuries. Authorities have not yet determined exactly how they were killed or what weapon, if any, was used.

After the killings, Arjun allegedly fled in his mother’s Honda Accord. Early Wednesday, police responded to an alarm at a parking lot in Wayland and found Arjun with the vehicle. He was taken into custody without resistance, the district attorney said at a news conference Wednesday afternoon.

Arjun faces multiple charges, including murder, assault and motor vehicle theft. He appeared in Lowell Juvenile Court Wednesday afternoon on the vehicle theft charge. The primary murder charges are expected to be presented Thursday in Concord District Court.

Police have yet to determine a clear motive for the brutal killings. However, Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said Arjun had recently displayed “concerning behavior,” including using the internet and ChatGPT to search for hypothetical scenarios or fictional stories involving the killing of his family.

Acton Police Chief Doug Sturtevant said Arjun was not unknown to police. Last year, his family contacted authorities after he reportedly ran away from home.

The district attorney described the incident as an “unspeakable tragedy” and an “extremely dark day.” The killings have shocked the community of Acton, located about 30 miles northwest of Boston.

A neighbor on Martha Lane told the media that police came to the area Tuesday night and asked residents whether they had seen anything unusual. The neighbor, who declined to give their name, said they looked outside out of curiosity and saw fire trucks, an ambulance and several police vehicles. “I had never met the family, but it is truly tragic,” the neighbor said.

Another neighbor, Devon Ripp, said, “It is incredibly sad and frightening to have something like this happen right next to our street. I have never seen such an emergency or such a large police presence here before.”
